Hi. I would like to complete some of the Avlea projects, starting with a table runner. Because I live in Ireland, postage costs make ordering the kit expensive. I should be able to purchase the pattern online and source my own linen (and goodness knows I have plenty of thread). My question is, what do I look for in linen? It seems to be described in weight rather than thread count. Can anyone advise?

You're going to want "counted thread" linen, which is linen specially woven for counted thread cross stitch. It's usually listed by the threads per inch. For example, Legacy Linen 30count is 30 threads per inch, but if you stitch over two threads (as most of us do), then it would be 15 sts per inch.
So, look for a linen that gives a thread count and you should be fine. The most common sizes are 28count, 30 count, 32 count and even 36 and 38 count (but, those get pretty tiny to stitch!). Happy stitching!
